           Lvov,thehusbandofNatalia,Kitty’ssister,hadspentallhislifeinforeigncapitals,wherehehadbeeneducated,andhadbeeninthediplomaticservice.

           “Capital!Iwasmeaningtosendtoyou.How’sKitty?Sithere,it’smorecomfortable.”Hegotupandpusheduparockingchair.“HaveyoureadthelastcircularintheJournaldeSt.Pétersbourg?Ithinkit’sexcellent,”hesaid,withaslightFrenchaccent.
