           Withmingledfeelingsofannoyanceatneverbeingabletogetawayfromacquaintancesanywhere,andlongingtofindsomesortofdiversionfromthemonotonyofhislife,Vronskylookedoncemoreatthegentleman,whohadretreatedandstoodstillagain,andatthesamemomentalightcameintotheeyesofboth.

           “Golenishtchev!”

           “Vronsky!”

           ItreallywasGolenishtchev,acomradeofVronsky’sintheCorpsofPages.InthecorpsGolenishtchevhadbelongedtotheliberalparty;heleftthecorpswithoutenteringthearmy,andhadnevertakenofficeunderthegovernment.Vronskyandhehadgonecompletelydifferentwaysonleavingthecorps,andhadonlymetoncesince.

           AtthatmeetingVronskyperceivedthatGolenishtchevhadtakenupasortoflofty,intellectuallyliberalline,andwasconsequentlydisposedtolookdownuponVronsky’sinterestsandcallinginlife.HenceVronskyhadmethimwiththechillingandhaughtymannerhesowellknewhowtoassume,themeaningofwhichwas:“Youmaylikeordislikemywayoflife,that’samatterofthemostperfectindifferencetome;youwillhavetotreatmewithrespectifyouwanttoknowme.”GolenishtchevhadbeencontemptuouslyindifferenttothetonetakenbyVronsky.Thissecondmeetingmighthavebeenexpected,onewouldhavesupposed,toestrangethemstillmore.Butnowtheybeamedandexclaimedwithdelightonrecognizingoneanother.VronskywouldneverhaveexpectedtobesopleasedtoseeGolenishtchev,butprobablyhewasnothimselfawarehowboredhewas.
