           ThechiefreasonwhytheprincewassoparticularlydisagreeabletoVronskywasthathecouldnothelpseeinghimselfinhim.Andwhathesawinthismirrordidnotgratifyhisself-esteem.Hewasaverystupidandveryself-satisfiedandveryhealthyandverywell-washedman,andnothingelse.Hewasagentlemanthatwastrue,andVronskycouldnotdenyit.Hewasequableandnotcringingwithhissuperiors,wasfreeandingratiatinginhisbehaviorwithhisequals,andwascontemptuouslyindulgentwithhisinferiors.Vronskywashimselfthesame,andregardeditasagreatmerittobeso.Butforthisprincehewasaninferior,andhiscontemptuousandindulgentattitudetohimrevoltedhim.

           “Brainlessbeef!canIbelikethat?”hethought.

           Bethatasitmight,when,ontheseventhday,hepartedfromtheprince,whowasstartingforMoscow,andreceivedhisthanks,hewashappytoberidofhisuncomfortablepositionandtheunpleasantreflectionofhimself.Hesaidgood-byetohimatthestationontheirreturnfromabearhunt,atwhichtheyhadhadadisplayofRussianprowesskeptupallnight.
