           Inreality,ofalltheRussianentertainmentstheprincelikedbestFrenchactressesandballetdancersandwhite-sealchampagne.Vronskywasusedtoprinces,but,eitherbecausehehadhimselfchangedoflate,orthathewasintoocloseproximitytotheprince,thatweekseemedfearfullywearisometohim.Thewholeofthatweekheexperiencedasensationsuchasamanmighthavesetinchargeofadangerousmadman,afraidofthemadman,andatthesametime,frombeingwithhim,fearingforhisownreason.Vronskywascontinuallyconsciousofthenecessityofneverforasecondrelaxingthetoneofsternofficialrespectfulness,thathemightnothimselfbeinsulted.Theprince’smanneroftreatingtheverypeoplewho,toVronsky’ssurprise,werereadytodescendtoanydepthstoprovidehimwithRussianamusements,wascontemptuous.HiscriticismsofRussianwomen,whomhewishedtostudy,morethanoncemadeVronskycrimsonwithindignation
