           Withachild’skeeninstinctforeverymanifestationoffeeling,hesawdistinctlythathisfather,hisgoverness,hisnurse,alldidnotmerelydislikeVronsky,butlookedonhimwithhorrorandaversion,thoughtheyneversaidanythingabouthim,whilehismotherlookedonhimashergreatestfriend.

           “Whatdoesitmean?Whoishe?HowoughtItolovehim?IfIdon’tknow,it’smyfault;eitherI’mstupidoranaughtyboy,”thoughtthechild.Andthiswaswhatcausedhisdubious,inquiring,sometimeshostile,expression,andtheshynessanduncertaintywhichVronskyfoundsoirksome.Thischild’spresencealwaysandinfalliblycalledupinVronskythatstrangefeelingofinexplicableloathingwhichhehadexperiencedoflate.Thischild’spresencecalledupbothinVronskyandinAnnaafeelingakintothefeelingofasailorwhoseesbythecompassthatthedirectioninwhichheisswiftlymovingisfarfromtherightone,butthattoarresthismotionisnotinhispower,thateveryinstantiscarryinghimfurtherandfurtheraway,andthattoadmittohimselfhisdeviationfromtherightdirectionisthesameasadmittinghiscertainruin.

           Thischild,withhisinnocentoutlookuponlife,wasthecompassthatshowedthemthepointtowhichtheyhaddepartedfromwhattheyknew,butdidnotwanttoknow.

           ThistimeSeryozhawasnotathome,andshewascompletelyalone.Shewassittingontheterracewaitingforthereturnofherson,whohadgoneoutforhiswalkandbeencaughtintherain.Shehadsentamanservantandamaidouttolookforhim.
