           Hethoughtofnothingbutthathewouldseeherdirectly,notinimagination,butliving,allofher,asshewasinreality.Hewasjustgoingin,steppingonhiswholefootsoasnottocreak,upthewornstepsoftheterrace,whenhesuddenlyrememberedwhathealwaysforgot,andwhatcausedthemosttorturingsideofhisrelationswithher,hersonwithhisquestioninghostile,ashefanciedeyes.

           Thisboywasmoreoftenthananyoneelseacheckupontheirfreedom.Whenhewaspresent,bothVronskyandAnnadidnotmerelyavoidspeakingofanythingthattheycouldnothaverepeatedbeforeeveryone;theydidnotevenallowthemselvestoreferbyhintstoanythingtheboydidnotunderstand.Theyhadmadenoagreementaboutthis,ithadsettleditself.Theywouldhavefeltitwoundingthemselvestodeceivethechild.Inhispresencetheytalkedlikeacquaintances.Butinspiteofthiscaution,Vronskyoftensawthechild’sintent,bewilderedglancefixeduponhim,andastrangeshyness,uncertainty,atonetimefriendliness,atanother,coldnessandreserve,intheboy’smannertohim;asthoughthechildfeltthatbetweenthismanandhismotherthereexistedsomeimportantbond,thesignificanceofwhichhecouldnotunderstand.

           Asafact,theboydidfeelthathecouldnotunderstandthisrelation,andhetriedpainfully,andwasnotabletomakecleartohimselfwhatfeelingheoughttohaveforthisman.
