           Stubbornly,asthoughinsistingonitsrights,thewindstoppedLevin,andtearingtheleavesandflowersoffthelimetreesandstrippingthewhitebirchbranchesintostrangeunseemlynakedness,ittwistedeverythingononesideacacias,flowers,burdocks,longgrass,andtalltree-tops.Thepeasantgirlsworkinginthegardenranshriekingintoshelterintheservants’quarters.Thestreamingrainhadalreadyflungitswhiteveiloverallthedistantforestandhalfthefieldscloseby,andwasrapidlyswoopingdownuponthecopse.Thewetoftherainspurtingupintinydropscouldbesmeltintheair.

           Holdinghisheadbentdownbeforehim,andstrugglingwiththewindthatstrovetotearthewrapsawayfromhim,Levinwasmovinguptothecopseandhadjustcaughtsightofsomethingwhitebehindtheoaktree,whentherewasasuddenflash,thewholeearthseemedonfire,andthevaultofheavenseemedcrashingoverhead.Openinghisblindedeyes,Levingazedthroughthethickveilofrainthatseparatedhimnowfromthecopse,andtohishorrorthefirstthinghesawwasthegreencrestofthefamiliaroak-treeinthemiddleofthecopseuncannilychangingitsposition.“Canithavebeenstruck?”Levinhardlyhadtimetothinkwhen,movingmoreandmorerapidly,theoaktreevanishedbehindtheothertrees,andheheardthecrashofthegreattreefallingupontheothers.

           Theflashoflightning,thecrashofthunder,andtheinstantaneouschillthatranthroughhimwereallmergedforLevininonesenseofterror.
