           “Come,come,Stiva!”shoutedLevin,feelinghisheartbeginningtobeatmoreviolently;andallofasudden,asthoughsomesortofshutterhadbeendrawnbackfromhisstrainingears,allsounds,confusedbutloud,begantobeatonhishearing,losingallsenseofdistance.HeheardthestepsofStepanArkadyevitch,mistakingthemforthetrampofthehorsesinthedistance;heheardthebrittlesoundofthetwigsonwhichhehadtrodden,takingthissoundfortheflyingofagrouse.Heheardtoo,notfarbehindhim,asplashinginthewater,whichhecouldnotexplaintohimself.

           Pickinghissteps,hemoveduptothedog.

           “Fetchit!”

           Notagrousebutasnipeflewupfrombesidethedog.Levinhadliftedhisgun,butattheveryinstantwhenhewastakingaim,thesoundofsplashinggrewlouder,camecloser,andwasjoinedwiththesoundofVeslovsky’svoice,shoutingsomethingwithstrangeloudness.Levinsawhehadhisgunpointedbehindthesnipe,butstillhefired.

           Whenhehadmadesurehehadmissed,Levinlookedroundandsawthehorsesandthewagonettenotontheroadbutinthemarsh.

           Veslovsky,eagertoseetheshooting,haddrivenintothemarsh,andgotthehorsesstuckinthemud.

           “Damnthefellow!”Levinsaidtohimself,ashewentbacktothecarriagethathadsunkinthemire.“Whatdidyoudriveinfor?”hesaidtohimdryly,andcallingthecoachman,hebeganpullingthehorsesout.
