           “No!Comealong,Levin,let’sgotogether!”Veslovskycalled.

           “Really,there’snotroom.Laska,back,Laska!Youwon’twantanotherdog,willyou?”

           Levinremainedwiththewagonette,andlookedenviouslyatthesportsmen.Theywalkedrightacrossthemarsh.Exceptlittlebirdsandpeewits,ofwhichVassenkakilledone,therewasnothinginthemarsh.

           “Come,youseenowthatitwasnotthatIgrudgedthemarsh,”saidLevin,“onlyit’swastingtime.”

           “Oh,no,itwasjollyallthesame.Didyouseeus?”saidVassenkaVeslovsky,clamberingawkwardlyintothewagonettewithhisgunandhispeewitinhishands.“HowsplendidlyIshotthisbird!Didn’tI?Well,shallwesoonbegettingtotherealplace?”

           Thehorsesstartedoffsuddenly,Levinknockedhisheadagainstthestockofsomeone’sgun,andtherewasthereportofashot.Thegundidactuallygoofffirst,butthatwashowitseemedtoLevin.ItappearedthatVassenkaVeslovskyhadpulledonlyonetrigger,andhadlefttheotherhammerstillcocked.Thechargeflewintothegroundwithoutdoingharmtoanyone.StepanArkadyevitchshookhisheadandlaughedreprovinglyatVeslovsky.ButLevinhadnotthehearttoreprovehim.Inthefirstplace,anyreproachwouldhaveseemedtobecalledforthbythedangerhehadincurredandthebumpthathadcomeuponLevin’sforehead.Andbesides,Veslovskywasatfirstsonaïvelydistressed,andthenlaughedsogood-humoredlyandinfectiouslyattheirgeneraldismay,thatonecouldnotbutlaughwithhim.
