           VronskycouldnotunderstandexactlywhathadpassedbetweentheKartasovsandAnna,buthesawthatsomethinghumiliatingforAnnahadhappened.Heknewthisbothfromwhathehadseen,andmostofallfromthefaceofAnna,who,hecouldsee,wastaxingeverynervetocarrythroughthepartshehadtakenup.Andinmaintainingthisattitudeofexternalcomposureshewascompletelysuccessful.Anyonewhodidnotknowherandhercircle,whohadnotheardalltheutterancesofthewomenexpressiveofcommiseration,indignation,andamazement,thatsheshouldshowherselfinsociety,andshowherselfsoconspicuouslywithherlaceandherbeauty,wouldhaveadmiredtheserenityandlovelinessofthiswomanwithoutasuspicionthatshewasundergoingthesensationsofamaninthestocks.

           Knowingthatsomethinghadhappened,butnotknowingpreciselywhat,Vronskyfeltathrillofagonizinganxiety,andhopingtofindoutsomething,hewenttowardshisbrother’sbox.PurposelychoosingthewayroundfurthestfromAnna’sbox,hejostledashecameoutagainstthecolonelofhisoldregimenttalkingtotwoacquaintances.VronskyheardthenameofMadameKarenina,andnoticedhowthecolonelhastenedtoaddressVronskyloudlybyname,withameaningglanceathiscompanions.

           “Ah,Vronsky!Whenareyoucomingtotheregiment?Wecan’tletyouoffwithoutasupper.You’reoneoftheoldset,”saidthecolonelofhisregiment.

           “Ican’tstop,awfullysorry,anothertime,”saidVronsky,andheranupstairstowardshisbrother’sbox.
