           “Thetutor’sthere;maybehe’snotdressed.I’lllethimknow.”

           Annastillmountedthefamiliarstaircase,notunderstandingwhattheoldmanwassaying.

           “Thisway,totheleft,ifyouplease.Excuseitsnotbeingtidy.Hishonor’sintheoldparlornow,”thehall-portersaid,panting.“Excuseme,waitalittle,yourexcellency;I’lljustsee,”hesaid,andovertakingher,heopenedthehighdooranddisappearedbehindit.Annastoodstillwaiting.“He’sonlyjustawake,”saidthehall-porter,comingout.Andattheveryinstanttheportersaidthis,Annacaughtthesoundofachildishyawn.Fromthesoundofthisyawnalonesheknewhersonandseemedtoseehimlivingbeforehereyes.

           “Letmein;goaway!”shesaid,andwentinthroughthehighdoorway.Ontherightofthedoorstoodabed,andsittingupinthebedwastheboy.Hislittlebodybentforwardwithhisnightshirtunbuttoned,hewasstretchingandstillyawning.Theinstanthislipscametogethertheycurvedintoablissfullysleepysmile,andwiththatsmileheslowlyanddeliciouslyrolledbackagain.

           “Seryozha!”shewhispered,goingnoiselesslyuptohim.

           Whenshewaspartedfromhim,andallthislattertimewhenshehadbeenfeelingafreshrushofloveforhim,shehadpicturedhimashewasatfouryearsold,whenshehadlovedhimmostofall.Nowhewasnoteventhesameaswhenshehadlefthim;hewasstillfurtherfromthefour-year-oldbaby,moregrownandthinner.
