           TheirstayinPetersburgwasthemorepainfultoVronskythatheperceivedallthetimeasortofnewmoodthathecouldnotunderstandinAnna.Atonetimeshewouldseeminlovewithhim,andthenshewouldbecomecold,irritable,andimpenetrable.Shewasworryingoversomething,andkeepingsomethingbackfromhim,anddidnotseemtonoticethehumiliationswhichpoisonedhisexistence,andforher,withherdelicateintuition,musthavebeenstillmoreunbearable.
