           Hewastorturedtoobythethoughtoftheletterhehadwrittenher;andmostofall,hisforgiveness,whichnobodywanted,andhiscareoftheotherman’schildmadehisheartburnwithshameandremorse.

           Andjustthesamefeelingofshameandregrethefeltnow,ashereviewedallhispastwithher,recallingtheawkwardwordsinwhich,afterlongwavering,hehadmadeheranoffer.

           “ButhowhaveIbeentoblame?”hesaidtohimself.Andthisquestionalwaysexcitedanotherquestioninhimwhethertheyfeltdifferently,didtheirlovingandmarryingdifferently,theseVronskysandOblonskys...thesegentlemenofthebedchamber,withtheirfinecalves.Andtherepassedbeforehismindawholeseriesofthesemettlesome,vigorous,self-confidentmen,whoalwaysandeverywheredrewhisinquisitiveattentioninspiteofhimself.Hetriedtodispelthesethoughts,hetriedtopersuadehimselfthathewasnotlivingforthistransientlife,butforthelifeofeternity,andthattherewaspeaceandloveinhisheart.

           Butthefactthathehadinthistransient,triviallifemade,asitseemedtohim,afewtrivialmistakestorturedhimasthoughtheeternalsalvationinwhichhebelievedhadnoexistence.Butthistemptationdidnotlastlong,andsoontherewasreestablishedoncemoreinAlexeyAlexandrovitch’ssoulthepeaceandtheelevationbyvirtueofwhichhecouldforgetwhathedidnotwanttoremember.
