           LidiaIvanovna’sdresshadcosthergreatpains,asindeedallherdresseshaddoneoflate.Heraimindresswasnowquitethereverseofthatshehadpursuedthirtyyearsbefore.Thenherdesirehadbeentoadornherselfwithsomething,andthemoreadornedthebetter.Now,onthecontrary,shewasperforcedeckedoutinawaysoinconsistentwithherageandherfigure,thatheroneanxietywastocontrivethatthecontrastbetweentheseadornmentsandherownexteriorshouldnotbetooappalling.AndasfarasAlexeyAlexandrovitchwasconcernedshesucceeded,andwasinhiseyesattractive.Forhimshewastheoneislandnotonlyofgoodwilltohim,butofloveinthemidstoftheseaofhostilityandjeeringthatsurroundedhim.
