           Therewereatthetimeasmanyreasonsforthestepasagainstit,andtherewasnooverbalancingconsiderationtooutweighhisinvariableruleofabstainingwhenindoubt.ButAnna’saunthadthroughacommonacquaintanceinsinuatedthathehadalreadycompromisedthegirl,andthathewasinhonorboundtomakeheranoffer.Hemadetheoffer,andconcentratedonhisbetrothedandhiswifeallthefeelingofwhichhewascapable.
