           Hesawthepossibilityoflookingmeninthefaceagainwithoutshame,andhecouldliveinaccordancewithhisownhabits.Onethinghecouldnotpluckoutofhisheart,thoughheneverceasedstrugglingwithit,wastheregret,amountingtodespair,thathehadlostherforever.Thatnow,havingexpiatedhissinagainstthehusband,hewasboundtorenounceher,andneverinfuturetostandbetweenherwithherrepentanceandherhusband,hehadfirmlydecidedinhisheart;buthecouldnottearoutofhishearthisregretatthelossofherlove,hecouldnoterasefromhismemorythosemomentsofhappinessthathehadsolittleprizedatthetime,andthathauntedhiminalltheircharm.

           SerpuhovskoyhadplannedhisappointmentatTashkend,andVronskyagreedtothepropositionwithouttheslightesthesitation.Butthenearerthetimeofdeparturecame,thebittererwasthesacrificehewasmakingtowhathethoughthisduty.

           Hiswoundhadhealed,andhewasdrivingaboutmakingpreparationsforhisdepartureforTashkend.

           “Toseeheronceandthentoburymyself,todie,”hethought,andashewaspayingfarewellvisits,heutteredthisthoughttoBetsy.Chargedwiththiscommission,BetsyhadgonetoAnna,andbroughthimbackanegativereply.

           “Somuchthebetter,”thoughtVronsky,whenhereceivedthenews.“Itwasaweakness,whichwouldhaveshatteredwhatstrengthIhaveleft.”

           NextdayBetsyherselfcametohiminthemorning,andannouncedthatshehadheardthroughOblonskyasapositivefactthatAlexeyAlexandrovitchhadagreedtoadivorce,andthatthereforeVronskycouldseeAnna.
