           AlexeyAlexandrovitchsmiledcoldly,withhislipsalone,meaningtosignifytoherandtohimselfthefirmnessofhisconviction;butthiswarmdefense,thoughitcouldnotshakehim,reopenedhiswound.Hebegantospeakwithgreaterheat.

           “Itisextremelydifficulttobemistakenwhenawifeherselfinformsherhusbandofthefactinformshimthateightyearsofherlife,andason,allthat’samistake,andthatshewantstobeginlifeagain,”hesaidangrily,withasnort.

           “DaryaAlexandrovna,”hesaid,nowlookingstraightintoDolly’skindly,troubledface,andfeelingthathistonguewasbeingloosenedinspiteofhimself,“Iwouldgiveagreatdealfordoubttobestillpossible.WhenIdoubted,Iwasmiserable,butitwasbetterthannow.WhenIdoubted,Ihadhope;butnowthereisnohope,andstillIdoubtofeverything.IaminsuchdoubtofeverythingthatIevenhatemyson,andsometimesdonotbelieveheismyson.Iamveryunhappy.”

           Hehadnoneedtosaythat.DaryaAlexandrovnahadseenthatassoonasheglancedintoherface;andshefeltsorryforhim,andherfaithintheinnocenceofherfriendbegantototter.

           “Oh,thisisawful,awful!Butcanitbetruethatyouareresolvedonadivorce?”

           “Iamresolvedonextrememeasures.Thereisnothingelseformetodo.”

           “Nothingelsetodo,nothingelsetodo....”shereplied,withtearsinhereyes.“Ohno,don’tsaynothingelsetodo!”shesaid.
