           Often,too,talkingtothepeasantsandexplainingtothemalltheadvantagesoftheplan,Levinfeltthatthepeasantsheardnothingbutthesoundofhisvoice,andwerefirmlyresolved,whateverhemightsay,nottoletthemselvesbetakenin.Hefeltthisespeciallywhenhetalkedtothecleverestofthepeasants,Ryezunov,anddetectedthegleaminRyezunov’seyeswhichshowedsoplainlybothironicalamusementatLevin,andthefirmconvictionthat,ifanyoneweretobetakenin,itwouldnotbehe,Ryezunov.ButinspiteofallthisLevinthoughtthesystemworked,andthatbykeepingaccountsstrictlyandinsistingonhisownway,hewouldprovetotheminthefuturetheadvantagesofthearrangement,andthenthesystemwouldgoofitself.
