           Sviazhskywasoneofthosepeople,alwaysasourceofwondertoLevin,whoseconvictions,verylogicalthoughneveroriginal,goonewaybythemselves,whiletheirlife,exceedinglydefiniteandfirminitsdirection,goesitswayquiteapartandalmostalwaysindirectcontradictiontotheirconvictions.Sviazhskywasanextremelyadvancedman.Hedespisedthenobility,andbelievedthemassofthenobilitytobesecretlyinfavorofserfdom,andonlyconcealingtheirviewsfromcowardice.HeregardedRussiaasaruinedcountry,ratherafterthestyleofTurkey,andthegovernmentofRussiaassobadthatheneverpermittedhimselftocriticizeitsdoingsseriously,andyethewasafunctionaryofthatgovernmentandamodelmarshalofnobility,andwhenhedroveabouthealwaysworethecockadeofofficeandthecapwiththeredband.Heconsideredhumanlifeonlytolerableabroad,andwentabroadtostayateveryopportunity,andatthesametimehecarriedonacomplexandimprovedsystemofagricultureinRussia,andwithextremeinterestfollowedeverythingandkneweverythingthatwasbeingdoneinRussia.HeconsideredtheRussianpeasantasoccupyingastageofdevelopmentintermediatebetweentheapeandtheman,andatthesametimeinthelocalassembliesnoonewasreadiertoshakehandswiththepeasantsandlistentotheiropinion.HebelievedneitherinGodnorthedevil,butwasmuchconcernedaboutthequestionoftheimprovementoftheclergyandthemaintenanceoftheirrevenues,andtookspecialtroubletokeepupthechurchinhisvillage.
