           Vronskylistenedattentively,buthewasnotsomuchinterestedbythemeaningofthewordsasbytheattitudeofSerpuhovskoywhowasalreadycontemplatingastrugglewiththeexistingpowers,andalreadyhadhislikesanddislikesinthathigherworld,whilehisowninterestinthegoverningworlddidnotgobeyondtheinterestsofhisregiment.Vronskyfelt,too,howpowerfulSerpuhovskoymightbecomethroughhisunmistakablefacultyforthinkingthingsoutandfortakingthingsin,throughhisintelligenceandgiftofwords,sorarelymetwithintheworldinwhichhemoved.And,ashamedashewasofthefeeling,hefeltenvious.

           “StillIhaven’ttheonethingofmostimportanceforthat,”heanswered;“Ihaven’tthedesireforpower.Ihaditonce,butit’sgone.”

           “Excuseme,that’snottrue,”saidSerpuhovskoy,smiling.

           “Yes,itistrue,itistrue...now!”Vronskyadded,tobetruthful.

           “Yes,it’struenow,that’sanotherthing;butthatnowwon’tlastforever.”

           “Perhaps,”answeredVronsky.
