           HehadgoneoutasfarasthefirststepofthebalconyandwasloudlyshoutingacrossthebandthatplayedOffenbach’squadrille,wavinghisarmsandgivingsomeorderstoafewsoldiersstandingononeside.Agroupofsoldiers,aquartermaster,andseveralsubalternscameuptothebalconywithVronsky.Thecolonelreturnedtothetable,wentoutagainontothestepswithatumblerinhishand,andproposedthetoast,“Tothehealthofourformercomrade,thegallantgeneral,PrinceSerpuhovskoy.Hurrah!”

           ThecolonelwasfollowedbySerpuhovskoy,whocameoutontothestepssmiling,withaglassinhishand.

           “Youalwaysgetyounger,Bondarenko,”hesaidtotherosy-checked,smart-lookingquartermasterstandingjustbeforehim,stillyoungishlookingthoughdoinghissecondtermofservice.

           ItwasthreeyearssinceVronskyhadseenSerpuhovskoy.Helookedmorerobust,hadlethiswhiskersgrow,butwasstillthesamegracefulcreature,whosefaceandfigurewereevenmorestrikingfromtheirsoftnessandnobilitythantheirbeauty.TheonlychangeVronskydetectedinhimwasthatsubdued,continualradianceofbeamingcontentwhichsettlesonthefacesofmenwhoaresuccessfulandaresureoftherecognitionoftheirsuccessbyeveryone.Vronskyknewthatradiantair,andimmediatelyobserveditinSerpuhovskoy.

           AsSerpuhovskoycamedownthestepshesawVronsky.Asmileofpleasurelighteduphisface.
