           Levinlookedabouthimandhardlyrecognizedtheplace,everythingwassochanged.Theimmensestretchofmeadowhadbeenmownandwassparklingwithapeculiarfreshbrilliance,withitslinesofalreadysweet-smellinggrassintheslantingraysoftheeveningsun.Andthebushesabouttheriverhadbeencutdown,andtheriveritself,notvisiblebefore,nowgleaminglikesteelinitsbends,andthemoving,ascending,peasants,andthesharpwallofgrassoftheunmownpartofthemeadow,andthehawkshoveringoverthestrippedmeadowallwasperfectlynew.Raisinghimself,Levinbeganconsideringhowmuchhadbeencutandhowmuchmorecouldstillbedonethatday.

           Theworkdonewasexceptionallymuchforforty-twomen.Theyhadcutthewholeofthebigmeadow,whichhad,intheyearsofserflabor,takenthirtyscythestwodaystomow.Onlythecornersremainedtodo,wheretherowswereshort.ButLevinfeltalongingtogetasmuchmowingdonethatdayaspossible,andwasvexedwiththesunsinkingsoquicklyinthesky.Hefeltnoweariness;allhewantedwastogethisworkdonemoreandmorequicklyandasmuchdoneaspossible.
