           Thebetterheknewhisbrother,themorehenoticedthatSergeyIvanovitch,andmanyotherpeoplewhoworkedforthepublicwelfare,werenotledbyanimpulseofthehearttocareforthepublicgood,butreasonedfromintellectualconsiderationsthatitwasarightthingtotakeinterestinpublicaffairs,andconsequentlytookinterestinthem.Levinwasconfirmedinthisgeneralizationbyobservingthathisbrotherdidnottakequestionsaffectingthepublicwelfareorthequestionoftheimmortalityofthesoulabitmoretoheartthanhedidchessproblems,ortheingeniousconstructionofanewmachine.
