           Yet,elevatedasMadameStahl’scharacterwas,touchingaswasherstory,andexaltedandmovingaswasherspeech,Kittycouldnothelpdetectinginhersometraitswhichperplexedher.Shenoticedthatwhenquestioningheraboutherfamily,MadameStahlhadsmiledcontemptuously,whichwasnotinaccordwithChristianmeekness.Shenoticed,too,thatwhenshehadfoundaCatholicpriestwithher,MadameStahlhadstudiouslykeptherfaceintheshadowofthelamp-shadeandhadsmiledinapeculiarway.Trivialasthesetwoobservationswere,theyperplexedher,andshehadherdoubtsastoMadameStahl.ButontheotherhandVarenka,aloneintheworld,withoutfriendsorrelations,withamelancholydisappointmentinthepast,desiringnothing,regrettingnothing,wasjustthatperfectionofwhichKittydaredhardlydream.InVarenkasherealizedthatonehasbuttoforgetoneselfandloveothers,andonewillbecalm,happy,andnoble.AndthatwaswhatKittylongedtobe.Seeingnowclearlywhatwasthemostimportant,Kittywasnotsatisfiedwithbeingenthusiasticoverit;sheatoncegaveherselfupwithherwholesoultothenewlifethatwasopeningtoher.FromVarenka’saccountsofthedoingsofMadameStahlandotherpeoplewhomshementioned,Kittyhadalreadyconstructedtheplanofherownfuturelife.
