           ButyetinevitablytheShtcherbatskyswerethrownmostintothesocietyofaMoscowlady,MaryaYevgenyevnaRtishtchevaandherdaughter,whomKittydisliked,becauseshehadfallenill,likeherself,overaloveaffair,andaMoscowcolonel,whomKittyhadknownfromchildhood,andalwaysseeninuniformandepaulets,andwhonow,withhislittleeyesandhisopenneckandfloweredcravat,wasuncommonlyridiculousandtedious,becausetherewasnogettingridofhim.Whenallthiswassofirmlyestablished,Kittybegantobeverymuchbored,especiallyastheprincewentawaytoCarlsbadandshewasleftalonewithhermother.Shetooknointerestinthepeoplesheknew,feelingthatnothingfreshwouldcomeofthem.Herchiefmentalinterestinthewatering-placeconsistedinwatchingandmakingtheoriesaboutthepeopleshedidnotknow.ItwascharacteristicofKittythatshealwaysimaginedeverythinginpeopleinthemostfavorablelightpossible,especiallysointhoseshedidnotknow.Andnowasshemadesurmisesastowhopeoplewere,whatweretheirrelationstooneanother,andwhattheywerelike,Kittyendowedthemwiththemostmarvelousandnoblecharacters,andfoundconfirmationofherideainherobservations.

           OfthesepeopletheonethatattractedhermostwasaRussiangirlwhohadcometothewatering-placewithaninvalidRussianlady,MadameStahl,aseveryonecalledher.MadameStahlbelongedtothehighestsociety,butshewassoillthatshecouldnotwalk,andonlyonexceptionallyfinedaysmadeherappearanceatthespringsinaninvalidcarriage.
