           Whenshethoughtofherson,andhisfutureattitudetohismother,whohadabandonedhisfather,shefeltsuchterroratwhatshehaddone,thatshecouldnotfaceit;but,likeawoman,couldonlytrytocomfortherselfwithlyingassurancesthateverythingwouldremainasitalwayshadbeen,andthatitwaspossibletoforgetthefearfulquestionofhowitwouldbewithherson.

           “Ibegyou,Ientreatyou,”shesaidsuddenly,takinghishand,andspeakinginquiteadifferenttone,sincereandtender,“neverspeaktomeofthat!”
