           “Tothestables,andI’vegottoseeBryansky,too,aboutthehorses,”saidVronsky.

           VronskyhadasafactpromisedtocallatBryansky’s,someeightmilesfromPeterhof,andtobringhimsomemoneyowingforsomehorses;andhehopedtohavetimetogetthatintoo.Buthiscomradeswereatonceawarethathewasnotonlygoingthere.

           Petritsky,stillhumming,winkedandmadeapoutwithhislips,asthoughhewouldsay:“Oh,yes,weknowyourBryansky.”

           “Mindyou’renotlate!”wasYashvin’sonlycomment;andtochangetheconversation:“How’smyroan?ishedoingallright?”heinquired,lookingoutofthewindowatthemiddleoneofthethreehorses,whichhehadsoldVronsky.

           “Stop!”criedPetritskytoVronskyashewasjustgoingout.“Yourbrotherleftaletterandanoteforyou.Waitabit;wherearethey?”

           Vronskystopped.

           “Well,wherearethey?”

           “Wherearethey?That’sjustthequestion!”saidPetritskysolemnly,movinghisforefingerupwardsfromhisnose.

           “Come,tellme;thisissilly!”saidVronskysmiling.

           “Ihavenotlightedthefire.Heresomewhereabout.”

           “Come,enoughfooling!Whereistheletter?”

           “No,I’veforgottenreally.Orwasitadream?Waitabit,waitabit!Butwhat’stheuseofgettinginarage.Ifyou’ddrunkfourbottlesyesterdayasIdidyou’dforgetwhereyouwerelying.Waitabit,I’llremember!”

           Petritskywentbehindthepartitionandlaydownonhisbed.
