           “You’vegotthematlast?”saidStepanArkadyevitch,layinghisfingeronthepaper.“Now,gentlemen....”

           Whenthecasehadbeenreadthrough,StepanArkadyevitchgotupandstretched,andbywayoftributetotheliberalismofthetimestookoutacigaretteintheboardroomandwentintohisprivateroom.Twoofthemembersoftheboard,theoldveteranintheservice,Nikitin,andtheKammerjunkerGrinevitch,wentinwithhim.

           “Weshallhavetimetofinishafterlunch,”saidStepanArkadyevitch.

           “Tobesureweshall!”saidNikitin.

           “AprettysharpfellowthisFominmustbe,”saidGrinevitchofoneofthepersonstakingpartinthecasetheywereexamining.

           StepanArkadyevitchfrownedatGrinevitch’swords,givinghimtherebytounderstandthatitwasimpropertopassjudgmentprematurely,andmadehimnoreply.
