           Suchadiscoverynowwouldonlymeanbreakingupfamilyhabits,andsheletherselfbedeceived,despisinghimandstillmoreherself,fortheweakness.Besidesthis,thecareofherlargefamilywasaconstantworrytoher:first,thenursingofheryoungbabydidnotgowell,thenthenursehadgoneaway,nowoneofthechildrenhadfallenill.

           “Well,howareallofyou?”askedhermother.

           “Ah,mamma,wehaveplentyoftroublesofourown.Liliisill,andI’mafraidit’sscarlatina.IhavecomeherenowtohearaboutKitty,andthenIshallshutmyselfupentirely,ifGodforbiditshouldbescarlatina.”

           Theoldprincetoohadcomeinfromhisstudyafterthedoctor’sdeparture,andafterpresentinghischeektoDolly,andsayingafewwordstoher,heturnedtohiswife:

           “Howhaveyousettledit?you’regoing?Well,andwhatdoyoumeantodowithme?”

           “Isupposeyouhadbetterstayhere,Alexander,”saidhiswife.

           “That’sasyoulike.”

           “Mamma,whyshouldn’tfathercomewithus?”saidKitty.“Itwouldbenicerforhimandforustoo.”

           TheoldprincegotupandstrokedKitty’shair.Sheliftedherheadandlookedathimwithaforcedsmile.Italwaysseemedtoherthatheunderstoodherbetterthananyoneinthefamily,thoughhedidnotsaymuchabouther.Beingtheyoungest,shewasherfather’sfavorite,andshefanciedthathislovegavehiminsight.Whennowherglancemethisbluekindlyeyeslookingintentlyather,itseemedtoherthathesawrightthroughher,andunderstoodallthatwasnotgoodthatwaspassingwithinher.
