           HeheardAgafeaMihalovnatalkingofhowProhorhadforgottenhisdutytoGod,andwiththemoneyLevinhadgivenhimtobuyahorse,hadbeendrinkingwithoutstopping,andhadbeatenhiswifetillhe’dhalfkilledher.Helistened,andreadhisbook,andrecalledthewholetrainofideassuggestedbyhisreading.ItwasTyndall’sTreatiseonHeat.HerecalledhisowncriticismsofTyndallofhiscomplacentsatisfactionintheclevernessofhisexperiments,andforhislackofphilosophicinsight.Andsuddenlytherefloatedintohismindthejoyfulthought:“Intwoyears’timeIshallhavetwoDutchcows;Pavaherselfwillperhapsstillbealive,adozenyoungdaughtersofBerkootandthethreeothershowlovely!”
