           AlthoughhehadbeenmuchinterestedbySergeyIvanovitch’sviewsofthenewepochinhistorythatwouldbecreatedbytheemancipationoffortymillionsofmenofSlavonicraceactingwithRussia,aconceptionquitenewtohim,andalthoughhewasdisturbedbyuneasywonderatbeingsentforbyKitty,assoonashecameoutofthedrawing-roomandwasalone,hismindrevertedatoncetothethoughtsofthemorning.AndallthetheoriesofthesignificanceoftheSlavelementinthehistoryoftheworldseemedtohimsotrivialcomparedwithwhatwaspassinginhisownsoul,thatheinstantlyforgotitallanddroppedbackintothesameframeofmindthathehadbeeninthatmorning.
