           Hisearswerefilledwiththeincessanthuminvariousnotes,nowthebusyhumoftheworkingbeeflyingquicklyoff,thentheblaringofthelazydrone,andtheexcitedbuzzofthebeesonguardprotectingtheirpropertyfromtheenemyandpreparingtosting.Onthefarthersideofthefencetheoldbee-keeperwasshavingahoopforatub,andhedidnotseeLevin.Levinstoodstillinthemidstofthebeehivesanddidnotcallhim.

           Hewasgladofachancetobealonetorecoverfromtheinfluenceofordinaryactuallife,whichhadalreadydepressedhishappymood.HethoughtthathehadalreadyhadtimetolosehistemperwithIvan,toshowcoolnesstohisbrother,andtotalkflippantlywithKatavasov.

           “Canithavebeenonlyamomentarymood,andwillitpassandleavenotrace?”hethought.Butthesameinstant,goingbacktohismood,hefeltwithdelightthatsomethingnewandimportanthadhappenedtohim.Reallifehadonlyforatimeovercastthespiritualpeacehehadfound,butitwasstilluntouchedwithinhim.

           Justasthebees,whirlingroundhim,nowmenacinghimanddistractinghisattention,preventedhimfromenjoyingcompletephysicalpeace,forcedhimtorestrainhismovementstoavoidthem,sohadthepettycaresthathadswarmedabouthimfromthemomenthegotintothetraprestrictedhisspiritualfreedom;butthatlastedonlysolongashewasamongthem.Justashisbodilystrengthwasstillunaffected,inspiteofthebees,sotoowasthespiritualstrengththathehadjustbecomeawareof.
