           Pullingthestiffreinandholdinginthegoodhorsethatsnortedwithimpatienceandseemedbeggingtobeletgo,LevinlookedroundatIvansittingbesidehim,notknowingwhattodowithhisunoccupiedhand,continuallypressingdownhisshirtasitpuffedout,andhetriedtofindsomethingtostartaconversationaboutwithhim.HewouldhavesaidthatIvanhadpulledthesaddle-girthuptoohigh,butthatwaslikeblame,andhelongedforfriendly,warmtalk.Nothingelseoccurredtohim.

           “Yourhonormustkeeptotherightandmindthatstump,”saidthecoachman,pullingthereinLevinheld.

           “Pleasedon’ttouchanddon’tteachme!”saidLevin,angeredbythisinterference.Now,asalways,interferencemadehimangry,andhefeltsorrowfullyatoncehowmistakenhadbeenhissuppositionthathisspiritualconditioncouldimmediatelychangehimincontactwithreality.

           HewasnotaquarterofamilefromhomewhenhesawGrishaandTanyarunningtomeethim.

           “UncleKostya!mamma’scoming,andgrandfather,andSergeyIvanovitch,andsomeoneelse,”theysaid,clamberingupintothetrap.

           “Anawfullyterribleperson!Andhedoeslikethiswithhisarms,”saidTanya,gettingupinthetrapandmimickingKatavasov.

           “Oldoryoung?”askedLevin,laughing,remindedofsomeone,hedidnotknowwhom,byTanya’sperformance.

           “Oh,Ihopeit’snotatiresomeperson!”thoughtLevin.

           Assoonasheturned,atabendintheroad,andsawthepartycoming,LevinrecognizedKatavasovinastrawhat,walkingalongswinginghisarmsjustasTanyahadshownhim.
