           Andhetriedtothinkofherasshewaswhenhemetherthefirsttime,atarailwaystationtoo,mysterious,exquisite,loving,seekingandgivinghappiness,andnotcruellyrevengefulasherememberedheronthatlastmoment.Hetriedtorecallhisbestmomentswithher,butthosemomentswerepoisonedforever.Hecouldonlythinkofherastriumphant,successfulinhermenaceofawhollyuselessremorsenevertobeeffaced.Helostallconsciousnessoftoothache,andhisfaceworkedwithsobs.

           Passingtwiceupanddownbesidethebaggageinsilenceandregaininghisself-possession,headdressedSergeyIvanovitchcalmly:
