           Katavasovdidnotlikehim,becausehewasunmanlyandeffeminateandsickly.Hewasobviouslyconvinced,especiallynowafterdrinking,thathewasperformingaheroicaction,andhebraggedofitinthemostunpleasantway.

           Thesecond,theretiredofficer,madeanunpleasantimpressiontoouponKatavasov.Hewas,itseemed,amanwhohadtriedeverything.Hehadbeenonarailway,hadbeenaland-steward,andhadstartedfactories,andhetalked,quitewithoutnecessity,ofallhehaddone,andusedlearnedexpressionsquiteinappropriately.

           Thethird,theartilleryman,onthecontrary,struckKatavasovveryfavorably.Hewasaquiet,modestfellow,unmistakablyimpressedbytheknowledgeoftheofficerandtheheroicself-sacrificeofthemerchantandsayingnothingabouthimself.WhenKatavasovaskedhimwhathadimpelledhimtogotoServia,heansweredmodestly:

           “Oh,well,everyone’sgoing.TheServianswanthelp,too.I’msorryforthem.”

           “Yes,youartillerymenespeciallyarescarcethere,”saidKatavasov.

           “Oh,Iwasn’tlongintheartillery,maybethey’llputmeintotheinfantryorthecavalry.”

           “Intotheinfantrywhentheyneedartillerymorethananything?”saidKatavasov,fancyingfromtheartilleryman’sapparentagethathemusthavereachedafairlyhighgrade.

           “Iwasn’tlongintheartillery;I’macadetretired,”hesaid,andhebegantoexplainhowhehadfailedinhisexamination.
