           “Whatafinefellowhe’sgrown!He’snotSeryozhanow,butquitefull-fledgedSergeyAlexyevitch!”saidStepanArkadyevitch,smiling,ashelookedatthehandsome,broad-shoulderedladinbluecoatandlongtrousers,whowalkedinalertlyandconfidently.Theboylookedhealthyandgood-humored.Hebowedtohisuncleastoastranger,butrecognizinghim,heblushedandturnedhurriedlyawayfromhim,asthoughoffendedandirritatedatsomething.Theboywentuptohisfatherandhandedhimanoteofthemarkshehadgainedinschool.

           “Well,that’sveryfair,”saidhisfather,“youcango.”

           “He’sthinnerandtaller,andhasgrownoutofbeingachildintoaboy;Ilikethat,”saidStepanArkadyevitch.“Doyourememberme?”

           Theboylookedbackquicklyathisuncle.

           “Yes,mononcle,”heanswered,glancingathisfather,andagainhelookeddowncast.

           Hisunclecalledhimtohim,andtookhishand.

           “Well,andhowareyougettingon?”hesaid,wantingtotalktohim,andnotknowingwhattosay.

           Theboy,blushingandmakingnoanswer,cautiouslydrewhishandaway.AssoonasStepanArkadyevitchletgohishand,heglanceddoubtfullyathisfather,andlikeabirdsetfree,hedartedoutoftheroom.

           AyearhadpassedsincethelasttimeSeryozhahadseenhismother.Sincethenhehadheardnothingmoreofher.Andinthecourseofthatyearhehadgonetoschool,andmadefriendsamonghisschoolfellows.Thedreamsandmemoriesofhismother,whichhadmadehimillafterseeingher,didnotoccupyhisthoughtsnow.
