           Whenthereaderhadfinished,thechairmanthankedhimandreadsomeversesofthepoetMentsenthimonthejubilee,andsaidafewwordsbywayofthankstothepoet.ThenKatavasovinhisloud,ringingvoicereadhisaddressonthescientificlaborsofthemanwhosejubileewasbeingkept.

           WhenKatavasovhadfinished,Levinlookedathiswatch,sawitwaspastone,andthoughtthattherewouldnotbetimebeforetheconcerttoreadMetrovhisbook,andindeed,hedidnotnowcaretodoso.Duringthereadinghehadthoughtovertheirconversation.HesawdistinctlynowthatthoughMetrov’sideasmightperhapshavevalue,hisownideashadavaluetoo,andtheirideascouldonlybemadeclearandleadtosomethingifeachworkedseparatelyinhischosenpath,andthatnothingwouldbegainedbyputtingtheirideastogether
