           Thedoctorinsistedonthenecessityofmovingtheprince;theprovincialMarshaloftheNobilitysentanofficialtoPrincessMarytopersuadehertogetawayasquicklyaspossible,andtheheadoftheruralpolicehavingcometoBoguchárovourgedthesamething,sayingthattheFrenchwereonlysometwenty-fivemilesaway,thatFrenchproclamationswerecirculatinginthevillages,andthatiftheprincessdidnottakeherfatherawaybeforethefifteenth,hecouldnotanswerfortheconsequences.

           Theprincessdecidedtoleaveonthefifteenth.Thecaresofpreparationandgivingorders,forwhicheveryonecametoher,occupiedherallday.Shespentthenightofthefourteenthasusual,withoutundressing,intheroomnexttotheonewheretheprincelay.Severaltimes,wakingup,sheheardhisgroansandmuttering,thecreakofhisbed,andthestepsofTíkhonandthedoctorwhentheyturnedhimover.Severaltimesshelistenedatthedoor,anditseemedtoherthathismutteringswerelouderthanusualandthattheyturnedhimoveroftener.Shecouldnotsleepandseveraltimeswenttothedoorandlistened,wishingtoenterbutnotdecidingtodoso.Thoughhedidnotspeak,PrincessMarysawandknewhowunpleasanteverysignofanxietyonhisaccountwastohim.Shehadnoticedwithwhatdissatisfactionheturnedfromthelookshesometimesinvoluntarilyfixedonhim.Sheknewthathergoinginduringthenightatanunusualhourwouldirritatehim.

           Butneverhadshefeltsogrievedforhimorsomuchafraidoflosinghim.
