           Onthetwenty-fifthofAugust,sohishistorianstellus,Napoleonspentthewholedayonhorsebackinspectingthelocality,consideringplanssubmittedtohimbyhismarshals,andpersonallygivingcommandstohisgenerals.

           TheoriginallineoftheRussianforcesalongtheriverKolocháhadbeendislocatedbythecaptureoftheShevárdinoRedoubtonthetwenty-fourth,andpartoftheline—theleftflank—hadbeendrawnback.Thatpartofthelinewasnotentrenchedandinfrontofitthegroundwasmoreopenandlevelthanelsewhere.Itwasevidenttoanyone,militaryornot,thatitwasheretheFrenchshouldattack.Itwouldseemthatnotmuchconsiderationwasneededtoreachthisconclusion,noranyparticularcareortroubleonthepartoftheEmperorandhismarshals,norwasthereanyneedofthatspecialandsupremequalitycalledgeniusthatpeoplearesoapttoascribetoNapoleon;yetthehistorianswhodescribedtheeventlaterandthemenwhothensurroundedNapoleon,andhehimself,thoughtotherwise.

           Napoleonrodeovertheplainandsurveyedthelocalitywithaprofoundairandinsilence,noddedwithapprovalorshookhisheaddubiously,andwithoutcommunicatingtothegeneralsaroundhimtheprofoundcourseofideaswhichguidedhisdecisionsmerelygavethemhisfinalconclusionsintheformofcommands.HavinglistenedtoasuggestionfromDavout,whowasnowcalledPrinced’Eckmühl,toturntheRussianleftwing,Napoleonsaiditshouldnotbedone,withoutexplainingwhynot.
