           CountIlyáRostóvhadresignedthepositionofMarshaloftheNobilitybecauseitinvolvedhimintoomuchexpense,butstillhisaffairsdidnotimprove.NatáshaandNicholasoftennoticedtheirparentsconferringtogetheranxiouslyandprivatelyandheardsuggestionsofsellingthefineancestralRostóvhouseandestatenearMoscow.ItwasnotnecessarytoentertainsofreelyaswhenthecounthadbeenMarshal,andlifeatOtrádnoewasquieterthaninformeryears,butstilltheenormoushouseanditslodgeswerefullofpeopleandmorethantwentysatdowntotableeveryday.Thesewerealltheirownpeoplewhohadsettleddowninthehousealmostasmembersofthefamily,orpersonswhowere,itseemed,obligedtoliveinthecount’shouse.SuchwereDimmlerthemusicianandhiswife,Vogelthedancingmasterandhisfamily,Belóva,anoldmaidenlady,aninmateofthehouse,andmanyotherssuchasPétya’stutors,thegirls’formergoverness,andotherpeoplewhosimplyfounditpreferableandmoreadvantageoustoliveinthecount’shousethanathome.Theyhadnotasmanyvisitorsasbefore,buttheoldhabitsoflifewithoutwhichthecountandcountesscouldnotconceiveofexistenceremainedunchanged.
