           InJunethebattleofFriedlandwasfought,inwhichthePávlogradsdidnottakepart,andafterthatanarmisticewasproclaimed.Rostóv,whofelthisfriend’sabsenceverymuch,havingnonewsofhimsinceheleftandfeelingveryanxiousabouthiswoundandtheprogressofhisaffairs,tookadvantageofthearmisticetogetleavetovisitDenísovinhospital.

           ThehospitalwasinasmallPrussiantownthathadbeentwicedevastatedbyRussianandFrenchtroops.Becauseitwassummer,whenitissobeautifuloutinthefields,thelittletownpresentedaparticularlydismalappearancewithitsbrokenroofsandfences,itsfoulstreets,tatteredinhabitants,andthesickanddrunkensoldierswanderingabout.

           Thehospitalwasinabrickbuildingwithsomeofthewindowframesandpanesbrokenandacourtyardsurroundedbytheremainsofawoodenfencethathadbeenpulledtopieces.Severalbandagedsoldiers,withpaleswollenfaces,weresittingorwalkingaboutinthesunshineintheyard.

           DirectlyRostóventeredthedoorhewasenvelopedbyasmellofputrefactionandhospitalair.OnthestairshemetaRussianarmydoctorsmokingacigar.ThedoctorwasfollowedbyaRussianassistant.

           “Ican’ttearmyselftopieces,”thedoctorwassaying.“CometoMakárAlexéevichintheevening.Ishallbethere.”

           Theassistantaskedsomefurtherquestions.

           “Oh,dothebestyoucan!Isn’titallthesame?”ThedoctornoticedRostóvcomingupstairs.

           “Whatdoyouwant,sir?”saidthedoctor.“Whatdoyouwant?Thebulletshavingsparedyou,doyouwanttotrytyphus?Thisisapesthouse,sir.
