           Morningcamewithitscaresandbustle.Everyonegotupandbegantomoveaboutandtalk,dressmakerscameagain.MáryaDmítrievnaappeared,andtheywerecalledtobreakfast.Natáshakeptlookinguneasilyateverybodywithwide-openeyes,asifwishingtointercepteveryglancedirectedtowardher,andtriedtoappearthesameasusual.

           Afterbreakfast,whichwasherbesttime,MáryaDmítrievnasatdowninherarmchairandcalledNatáshaandthecounttoher.

           “Well,friends,Ihavenowthoughtthewholematteroverandthisismyadvice,”shebegan.“Yesterday,asyouknow,IwenttoseePrinceBolkónski.Well,Ihadatalkwithhim....Hetookitintohisheadtobeginshouting,butIamnotonetobeshouteddown.IsaidwhatIhadtosay!”

           “Well,andhe?”askedthecount.

           “He?He’scrazy...hedidnotwanttolisten.Butwhat’stheuseoftalking?Asitiswehavewornthepoorgirlout,”saidMáryaDmítrievna.“MyadvicetoyouisfinishyourbusinessandgobackhometoOtrádnoe...andwaitthere.”

           CountRostóvapprovedofthissuggestion,appreciatingitsreasonableness.IftheoldmancamerounditwouldbeallthebettertovisithiminMoscoworatBaldHillslateron;andifnot,thewedding,againsthiswishes,couldonlybearrangedatOtrádnoe.
