           AtBaldHills,PrinceNicholasAndréevichBolkónski’sestate,thearrivalofyoungPrinceAndrewandhiswifewasdailyexpected,butthisexpectationdidnotupsettheregularroutineoflifeintheoldprince’shousehold.GeneralinChiefPrinceNicholasAndréevich(nicknamedinsociety,“theKingofPrussia”)eversincetheEmperorPaulhadexiledhimtohiscountryestatehadlivedtherecontinuouslywithhisdaughter,PrincessMary,andhercompanion,MademoiselleBourienne.Thoughinthenewreignhewasfreetoreturntothecapitals,hestillcontinuedtoliveinthecountry,remarkingthatanyonewhowantedtoseehimcouldcomethehundredmilesfromMoscowtoBaldHills,whilehehimselfneedednooneandnothing.Heusedtosaythatthereareonlytwosourcesofhumanvice—idlenessandsuperstition,andonlytwovirtues—activityandintelligence.Hehimselfundertookhisdaughter’seducation,andtodevelopthesetwocardinalvirtuesinhergaveherlessonsinalgebraandgeometrytillshewastwenty,andarrangedherlifesothatherwholetimewasoccupied.Hewashimselfalwaysoccupied:writinghismemoirs,solvingproblemsinhighermathematics,turningsnuffboxesonalathe,workinginthegarden,orsuperintendingthebuildingthatwasalwaysgoingonathisestate.Asregularityisaprimeconditionfacilitatingactivity,regularityinhishouseholdwascarriedtothehighestpointofexactitude.Healwayscametotableunderpreciselythesameconditions,andnotonlyatthesamehourbutatthesameminute.
