           ThemovementsoftheRussianandFrencharmiesduringthecampaignfromMoscowbacktotheNiemenwerelikethoseinagameofRussianblindman’sbuff,inwhichtwoplayersareblindfoldedandoneofthemoccasionallyringsalittlebelltoinformthecatcherofhiswhereabouts.Firstheringshisbellfearlessly,butwhenhegetsintoatightplaceherunsawayasquietlyashecan,andoftenthinkingtoescaperunsstraightintohisopponent’sarms.

           AtfirstwhiletheywerestillmovingalongtheKalúgaroad,Napoleon’sarmiesmadetheirpresenceknown,butlaterwhentheyreachedtheSmolénskroadtheyranholdingtheclapperoftheirbelltight—andoftenthinkingtheywereescapingranrightintotheRussians.

           OwingtotherapidityoftheFrenchflightandtheRussianpursuitandtheconsequentexhaustionofthehorses,thechiefmeansofapproximatelyascertainingtheenemy’sposition—bycavalryscouting—wasnotavailable.Besides,asaresultofthefrequentandrapidchangeofpositionbyeacharmy,evenwhatinformationwasobtainedcouldnotbedeliveredintime.Ifnewswasreceivedonedaythattheenemyhadbeeninacertainpositionthedaybefore,bythethirddaywhensomethingcouldhavebeendone,thatarmywasalreadytwodays’marchfartheronandinquiteanotherposition.

           Onearmyfledandtheotherpursued.BeyondSmolénsktherewereseveraldifferentroadsavailablefortheFrench,andonewouldhavethoughtthatduringtheirstayoffourdaystheymighthavelearnedwheretheenemywas,mighthavearrangedsomemoreadvantageousplanandundertakensomethingnew.
