           WhentheyalldrovebackfromPelagéyaDanílovna’s,Natásha,whoalwayssawandnoticedeverything,arrangedthatsheandMadameSchossshouldgobackinthesleighwithDimmler,andSónyawithNicholasandthemaids.

           OnthewaybackNicholasdroveatasteadypaceinsteadofracingandkeptpeeringbythatfantasticall-transforminglightintoSónya’sfaceandsearchingbeneaththeeyebrowsandmustacheforhisformerandhispresentSónyafromwhomhehadresolvednevertobepartedagain.HelookedandrecognizinginherboththeoldandthenewSónya,andbeingremindedbythesmellofburntcorkofthesensationofherkiss,inhaledthefrostyairwithafullbreastand,lookingatthegroundflyingbeneathhimandatthesparklingsky,felthimselfagaininfairyland.

           “Sónya,isitwellwiththee?”heaskedfromtimetotime.

           “Yes!”shereplied.“Andwiththee?”

           WhenhalfwayhomeNicholashandedthereinstothecoachmanandranforamomenttoNatásha’ssleighandstoodonitswing.

           “Haveyoutoldher?”askedNatásha,suddenlybeamingalloverwithjoy.

           “Iamsoglad,soglad!Iwasbeginningtobevexedwithyou.Ididnottellyou,butyouhavebeentreatingherbadly.Whataheartshehas,Nicholas!Iamhorridsometimes,butIwasashamedtobehappywhileSónyawasnot,”continuedNatásha.“NowIamsoglad!Well,runbacktoher.”
