           OntheeveningofthefirstofSeptember,afterhisinterviewwithKutúzov,CountRostopchínhadreturnedtoMoscowmortifiedandoffendedbecausehehadnotbeeninvitedtoattendthecouncilofwar,andbecauseKutúzovhadpaidnoattentiontohisoffertotakepartinthedefenseofthecity;amazedalsoatthenoveloutlookrevealedtohimatthecamp,whichtreatedthetranquillityofthecapitalanditspatrioticfervorasnotmerelysecondarybutquiteirrelevantandunimportantmatters.Distressed,offended,andsurprisedbyallthis,RostopchínhadreturnedtoMoscow.Aftersupperhelaydownonasofawithoutundressing,andwasawakenedsoonaftermidnightbyacourierbringinghimaletterfromKutúzov.Thisletterrequestedthecounttosendpoliceofficerstoguidethetroopsthroughthetown,asthearmywasretreatingtotheRyazánroadbeyondMoscow.ThiswasnotnewstoRostopchín.HehadknownthatMoscowwouldbeabandonednotmerelysincehisinterviewthepreviousdaywithKutúzovonthePoklónnyHillbuteversincethebattleofBorodinó,forallthegeneralswhocametoMoscowafterthatbattlehadsaidunanimouslythatitwasimpossibletofightanotherbattle,andsincethenthegovernmentpropertyhadbeenremovedeverynight,andhalftheinhabitantshadleftthecitywithRostopchín’sownpermission.Yetallthesamethisinformationastonishedandirritatedthecount,comingasitdidintheformofasimplenotewithanorderfromKutúzov,andreceivedatnight,breakinginonhisbeautysleep.
