           AftertheexecutionPierrewasseparatedfromtherestoftheprisonersandplacedaloneinasmall,ruined,andbefouledchurch.

           Towardeveninganoncommissionedofficerenteredwithtwosoldiersandtoldhimthathehadbeenpardonedandwouldnowgotothebarracksfortheprisonersofwar.Withoutunderstandingwhatwassaidtohim,Pierregotupandwentwiththesoldiers.Theytookhimtotheupperendofthefield,wherethereweresomeshedsbuiltofcharredplanks,beams,andbattens,andledhimintooneofthem.InthedarknesssometwentydifferentmensurroundedPierre.Helookedatthemwithoutunderstandingwhotheywere,whytheywerethere,orwhattheywantedofhim.Heheardwhattheysaid,butdidnotunderstandthemeaningofthewordsandmadenokindofdeductionfromorapplicationofthem.Herepliedtoquestionstheyputtohim,butdidnotconsiderwhowaslisteningtohisreplies,norhowtheywouldunderstandthem.Helookedattheirfacesandfigures,buttheyallseemedtohimequallymeaningless.

           FromthemomentPierrehadwitnessedthoseterriblemurderscommittedbymenwhodidnotwishtocommitthem,itwasasifthemainspringofhislife,onwhicheverythingdependedandwhichmadeeverythingappearalive,hadsuddenlybeenwrenchedoutandeverythinghadcollapsedintoaheapofmeaninglessrubbish.Thoughhedidnotacknowledgeittohimself,hisfaithintherightorderingoftheuniverse,inhumanity,inhisownsoul,andinGod,hadbeendestroyed.Hehadexperiencedthisbefore,butneversostronglyasnow.
