           TheofficerandsoldierswhohadarrestedPierretreatedhimwithhostilitybutyetwithrespect,intheguardhousetowhichhewastaken.Intheirattitudetowardhimcouldstillbefeltbothuncertaintyastowhohemightbe—perhapsaveryimportantperson—andhostilityasaresultoftheirrecentpersonalconflictwithhim.

           Butwhentheguardwasrelievednextmorning,Pierrefeltthatforthenewguard—bothofficersandmen—hewasnotasinterestingashehadbeentohiscaptors;andinfacttheguardoftheseconddaydidnotrecognizeinthisbig,stoutmaninapeasantcoatthevigorouspersonwhohadfoughtsodesperatelywiththemarauderandtheconvoyandhadutteredthosesolemnwordsaboutsavingachild;theysawinhimonlyNo.17ofthecapturedRussians,arrestedanddetainedforsomereasonbyorderoftheHigherCommand.IftheynoticedanythingremarkableaboutPierre,itwasonlyhisunabashed,meditativeconcentrationandthoughtfulness,andthewayhespokeFrench,whichstruckthemassurprisinglygood.Inspiteofthishewasplacedthatdaywiththeotherarrestedsuspects,astheseparateroomhehadoccupiedwasrequiredbyanofficer.

           AlltheRussiansconfinedwithPierreweremenofthelowestclassand,recognizinghimasagentleman,theyallavoidedhim,moreespeciallyashespokeFrench.Pierrefeltsadathearingthemmakingfunofhim.

           Thateveninghelearnedthatalltheseprisoners(he,probably,amongthem)weretobetriedforincendiarism.
