           Andwhatseemedstillmoreterribletoherwasthatsinceherfather’sillnessbegan(perhapsevensooner,whenshestayedwithhimexpectingsomethingtohappen),allthepersonaldesiresandhopesthathadbeenforgottenorsleepingwithinherhadawakened.Thoughtsthathadnotenteredhermindforyears—thoughtsofalifefreefromthefearofherfather,andeventhepossibilityofloveandoffamilyhappiness—floatedcontinuallyinherimaginationliketemptationsofthedevil.Thrustthemasideasshewould,questionscontinuallyrecurredtoherastohowshewouldorderherlifenow,afterthat.TheseweretemptationsofthedevilandPrincessMaryknewit.Sheknewthatthesoleweaponagainsthimwasprayer,andshetriedtopray.Sheassumedanattitudeofprayer,lookedattheicons,repeatedthewordsofaprayer,butshecouldnotpray.Shefeltthatadifferentworldhadnowtakenpossessionofher—thelifeofaworldofstrenuousandfreeactivity,quiteopposedtothespiritualworldinwhichtillnowshehadbeenconfinedandinwhichhergreatestcomforthadbeenprayer.Shecouldnotpray,couldnotweep,andworldlycarestookpossessionofher.

           ItwasbecomingdangeroustoremaininBoguchárovo.NewsoftheapproachoftheFrenchcamefromallsides,andinonevillage,tenmilesfromBoguchárovo,ahomesteadhadbeenlootedbyFrenchmarauders.
