Chapter 4

           Ferapóntov’swholehouseholdcameouttoo,followingAlpátychandthecoachman.Thewomen,whohadbeensilenttillthen,suddenlybegantowailastheylookedatthefires—thesmokeandeventheflamesofwhichcouldbeseeninthefailingtwilight—andasifinreplythesamekindoflamentationwasheardfromotherpartsofthestreet.InsidetheshedAlpátychandthecoachmanarrangedthetangledreinsandtracesoftheirhorseswithtremblinghands.

           AsAlpátychwasdrivingoutofthegatehesawsometensoldiersinFerapóntov’sopenshop,talkingloudlyandfillingtheirbagsandknapsackswithflourandsunflowerseeds.JustthenFerapóntovreturnedandenteredhisshop.Onseeingthesoldiershewasabouttoshoutatthem,butsuddenlystoppedand,clutchingathishair,burstintosobsandlaughter:

           “Looteverything,lads!Don’tletthosedevilsgetit!”hecried,takingsomebagsofflourhimselfandthrowingthemintothestreet.

           Someofthesoldierswerefrightenedandranaway,otherswentonfillingtheirbags.OnseeingAlpátych,Ferapóntovturnedtohim:

           “Russiaisdonefor!”hecried.“Alpátych,I’llsettheplaceonfiremyself.We’redonefor!...”andFerapóntovranintotheyard.

           Soldierswerepassinginaconstantstreamalongthestreetblockingitcompletely,sothatAlpátychcouldnotpassoutandhadtowait.Ferapóntov’swifeandchildrenwerealsosittinginacartwaitingtillitwaspossibletodriveout.

           Nighthadcome.Therewerestarsintheskyandthenewmoonshoneoutamidthesmokethatscreenedit.
